Gum Disease
What is gum disease?

Gum disease or periodontal disease is the infection and inflammation of the tissues surrounding a tooth. This includes the gums, bone and ligaments supporting your teeth.
What causes gum disease?
Bacteria in plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) can cause inflammation of the gums called gingivitis. This is where redness, swelling and bleeding with brushing and flossing occurs. Gingivitis is an easily treatable condition and is reversible.
However, if gingivitis is not detected and treated it can progress to more advanced forms of gum disease called periodontitis. This is where the bone and ligament supporting the tooth can also be infected and destroyed leading to loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Gum disease may be present and progress without any pain. There are however signs that should alert you that you may be suffering from gum disease.
These are:
- Red, swollen, tender, painful or bleeding gums
- Gums that have shrunk from the teeth
- Persistent bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth
- Abscesses between teeth and gums
- A change in the fit of your dentures
- Loose teeth, or gaps appearing between teeth
Is Periodontal Disease linked to our general health?
Research has also proven that periodontal disease is directly linked to our general health and if left untreated can increase the risk of developing more serious conditions such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions, and diabetes. This highlights the importance of regular dental exams to help detect and treat periodontal disease before it escalates.
